About Care Camps
Since its inception, Care Camps has raised more than $14 million so kids can attend camp free of charge, with no additional cost to their already financially burdened families.
While the number of kids diagnosed with cancer continues to grow, the cost of camp has risen to an average of $1,800 a week per child, creating an ever-increasing demand for funding.
Someday, cancer will be nothing more than a memory. Until that day, Care Camps is here to bring hope, healing and outright fun for kids with cancer and their families.
Through its charitable fundraising efforts, Care Camps will provide necessary support to send kids with cancer to medically supervised cancer camps where they can have fun, build awesome friendships, feel the joy that comes from camping and spending time in nature, make memories that will help them heal and ultimately return home feeling renewed and filled with hope.
How We Got Started
In 1984, the KOA (Kampgrounds of America) Owners’ Association created KOA Care Camps to provide opportunities for children with cancer to attend oncology camps, where they can escape from their pain and suffering, receive their treatments and have lots of fun while being with other kids just like them.
Where We Are Now
Working together, KOA owners, the KOA home office, our partners and KOA campers raise funds for a single cause: to send children affected by cancer to medically supervised camps where they have a wonderful time in the great outdoors with other kids who understand what they’re going through. They do it all while receiving the treatments they need. Until cancer is a memory, Care Camps will continue to help these great kids make joyful memories of their own.
Frequently Asked Questions
ARE THESE CANCER CAMPS HELD ON KOA CAMPGROUNDS?
They are not, as KOA campgrounds do not have the facilities needed to offer specialized treatments and otherwise accommodate the unique needs of children with cancer.
ARE THE CANCER CAMPS YOU SUPPORT OWNED AND OPERATED BY KOA OR KOA CARE CAMPS?
The camps we support are not affiliated with either KOA or KOA Care Camps. Each is independently owned and operated.
WHAT PERCENTAGE OF DONATIONS MADE TO CARE CAMPS ARE USED FOR ADMINISTRATION?
Care Camps rates 4 out of 4 Stars based on Charity Navigator performance criteria. The charity receives funding from KOA Inc in the amount of $306,233 to off-set these costs and to provide additional donation revenue.
As a result 100% of the donations we receive from other sources such as KOA campgrounds, corporations, foundation and individuals goes directly to the kids at the cancer camps.
